Motion design 1 – Motion design history

In our western world, animation history goes back some four hundred years, from the age of the magic lanterns to the computer generated animations of the 21st century. Animation is still images displayed in a high speed, creating the illution of movement. When I was a child living not far from Preus Museum of photography – a site I visited often, I remember a device that looks like a Zoetrope. A zoetrope is a late 1900 century device where images are projected into a cylinder and viewed through a small opening in the cylinder. The one at Preus museum displays a cat – I think.

I like this way of creating motion due to its analog approach. A lot of work for a graphic designer is done on the computer, and analog work is a refreshing break from all of it.
